Great Escape Festival K-Indie line-up

South Korean indie artists will hit Brighton’s The Great Escape festival once again this year.

The Great Escape is a festival for new music, showcasing 450 emerging artists from all over the world in 30+ walkable venues across the city.

Having showcased rising UK stars such Rag’n’Bone Man before major mainstream success shows the great success of such festivals, and proves them a perfect opportunity for Korean artists to make steps into the UK market.

This year will see ADOY’s first foray into the UK festival scene, with Billy Carter and Say Sue Me returning to the UK and playing The Great Escape for the first time.

ADOY’s music draws images that are dreamy, upbeat, and intuitive – Summer, sea waves, surfing, running, night walks, cold beer, cigarette, good chat with friends, etc. Beneath this surface, deeper images – dreams, reminiscence, future, loneliness – blend in.

With their first EP, [CATNIP] (2017), receiving acclaims for its well-polished and distinctive sounds, ADOY has been performing on major stages including Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival, EBS Space, and NAVER Onstage. Currently, ADOY is working their way for their second EP, which will be released in May 2018.

Billy Carter started in 2011 by Jiwon Kim(Vocalist) and Jina Kim(Guitarist) and took its current rock trio form when Hyunjoon Lee(Drummer) was added on the band  in 2014. Soon after, Billy Carter released their first untitled EP, commonly called “The Red,” and  in 2016, released their second untitled EP, an acoustic album referred to as “The Yellow,” and their first full length album, “Here I Am.  Since then, they have toured heavily throughout South Korea, with appearances on TV shows and music festivals, and completed their first EU tour, which included Primavera Pro.  December 2017, They released two EPs which are filled with powerful, dark, and beautiful songs that address some of the most difficult and intimate experiences of life: finding closure in life as death approaches, an end which leads to a new beginning, hope that gives great agony and despair but can also bring sweet relief, Billy Carter uses these stories like a double-edged sword in the eight songs of the two EPs.

Say Sue Me are a surf-inspired indie rock quartet from Busan, South Korea. Friends since 5th grade Jae Young (Bass) and Kim Byungkyu (guitar) were introduced to drummer kang Semin and then they heard Sumi’s speaking voice in a cafe and decided she should be the singer. Sumi Choi turned out to be a natural at songwriting. The bands practice room is located in five minutes on foot from Gwangalli Beach in Busan but it’s their love of 60’s surf (The Ventures/Dick Dale) that adds a lust for the aquatic to their sound, tethered with a healthy dose of 90’s US indie rock/pop melancholy (Seam, Yo La Tengo, Pavement).

Note: On February 27th the Korean Herald stated 3rd Line Butterfly has been confirmed for The Great Escape. At the time of publishing, the group have not been added to the official festival line-up.

The Great Escape runs from the 17th to the 19th May.
Tickets can be purchased via The Great Escape website.
