Zandari Festa holds firm as South Korea’s top music showcase festival. The annual event takes place in Seoul’s Hongdae area, the epicentre of youth culture in South Korea and ground zero for the country’s indie music scene. Each Autumn, Zandari Festa brings together acts and music industry professionals from around the world for concerts and conferences at a number of unique venues around Hongdae. One wristband allows festival-goers access to all of Zandari Festa 2017’s shows.

The festival showcases established acts, alongside exciting up-and-comers from the country’s vast indie scene. Each year Zandari places more emphasis on becoming a truly global event – attracting more international talent. Zandari exposes Korean audiences to a wider range of music, and aids in bridge building between artists, and industry professional from all over the world.

This year the festival will take place from 29th September to 1st October, with 120 artists (60 Korean, 60 international) taking to the stage at ten different venues in Hongdae.

We spoke to two Korean and two British bands included in the line up about their music, and the imminent festival.

KYUNGMO KOO
Silica Gel: Bass player
Korea

Have you played at Zandari Festa before?
Yes, we played at Zandari Festa in 2015. It was the first big festival we played after releasing our first EP.

Why is Zandari Festa a great festival for Korea’s indie scene?
The festival gives Korean independent musicians the chance to meet people from overseas including musicians, music industry people, and even fans. This can lead to more opportunities for musicians to share their music in different countries.

Why are you excited to be playing at Zandari Festa 2017?
We’ll be able to meet strange but very exciting people from everywhere.

What bands do you want to try and watch at Zandari Festa 2017?
There are so many! Amado Jaram Band, SsingSsing, 3rd Line Butterfly, In the Endless Zanhyang We Are, Kingston Rudieska, The Barberettes, Patients, Lowdown 30 and lots of other bands we don’t know about yet.

SUHYUN KIM
DTSQ: Guitarist, Vocalist
Korea

Have you played at Zandari Festa before?

Yes! This year will be our third time appearing at the festival.

Why is Zandari Festa a great festival for Korea’s indie scene?
It’s the only proper showcase Festival in Korea. Honestly if you’re independent musician in Korea, there aren’t many chances to meet and talk with people who work in the music industry overseas. But Zandari Festa makes it possible and to do this. You can show your talents to music industry staff and other bands from all over the world. And who knows? Maybe some amazing opportunities may come your way after that.

Why are you excited to be playing at Zandari Festa 2017?
I think another name for Zandari Festa should be ‘Insane Drinking Party.’ There’s lots of free beer for musicians all weekend long, which is good because when we’re drunk, we feel like we can be friends with everyone. Now whether we remember all the people we met the next morning is another question! The festival has crazy opening and closing parties and there will be so many chances to meet many new people, which is why we love Zandari Festa and are excited to be a part of this year’s event.

What bands do you want to try and watch at Zandari Festa 2017?
I want to watch as many foreign bands as possible.

JO DARC
The Twistettes: Bassist, vocalist
Scotland

Will this be your first trip to Korea?
Yes, we’re really excited and can’t wait to experience it!

What made you want to apply to play at Zandari Festa?
It’s a part of the world we’ve always been interested to visit so when the opportunity to apply came up we were keen. Our friends from Scotland, Colonel Mustard and the Dijon 5, played last year and they had such an amazing time that it really spurred us on. They have many stories of the good times they had when in Seoul – it sounds like a fun city!

Why are you excited to be playing at Zandari Festa 2017?
We love adventure so the opportunity to play somewhere new and experience a different country and culture is really appealing to us. We have seen a couple of bands from Korea when they were on tour in the UK, Wasted Johnny’s and 57, and we loved the music they were playing and we’re keen to see more! There is something inspirational about being immersed in an unfamiliar music scene. There’s so much to take in and learn about and hopefully some opportunities to work together in some way. It’s very exciting!

What are some of the things you’re hoping to see and do while you’re in Seoul?

We are really looking forward to meeting the people. I’ve heard that they are generally very friendly and have a great sense of humour. We’re excited to hear the other acts at the festival and to experience the nightlife. We’ve heard that Koreans really know how to party! We’d also like to do some exploring to really get a feel for the city, maybe check out some galleries as well as see some of the tourist attractions like the palaces and Bukchon Hanok Village. We both love food as well so we’re really looking forward to eating the local dishes and of course, drinking some soju! We’re only there for five days, so not lots of time, but we plan to squeeze as much in as we can!

CHRISTOPHER HEMBROUGH
Campfire Social: Guitarist, vocalist
Wales

Will this be your first trip to Korea?

This will be our first time! We’re super excited to go and play there.

What made you want to apply to play at Zandari Festa?
We saw an advert posted by the ever wonderful Focus Wales and just went for it! Who wouldn’t want to play at such an important music festival in South Korea?

Why are you excited to be playing at Zandari Festa 2017?
As we mentioned it’ll be our first time in South Korea, but also there are so many great bands at the festival!

What are some of the things you’re hoping to see and do while you’re in Seoul?
We’re definitely going to catch Say Sue Me’s set, those guys are awesome! But apart from music stuff, we’re looking forward to taking the whole city in! We want to do everything we can.

Share.
