Zandari Festa Spotlight

0

Started in 2012, Zandari Festa quickly established itself as South Korea’s top music showcase festival. The annual event takes place in Seoul’s Hongdae area, the epicentre of youth culture in South Korea and ground zero for the country’s indie music scene. Each autumn, Zandari Festa brings together acts and music industry professionals from around the world for concerts and conferences at a number of unique venues around Hongdae. One wristband allows festival-goers access to all of Zandari Festa’s shows.

Along with showcasing established acts and exciting up-and-comers from South Korea’s burgeoning indie scene. With each passing year, Zandari Festa has placed a greater emphasis on becoming a truly global event. By attracting more international talent, Zandari Festa has been able to expose audiences to a wider range of music and has helped build bridges that have allowed for Korean and overseas artists, music companies and festivals to better communicate, work together and learn from each other.

Zandari Festa 2018 is currently in full swing (October 4 – 7), with nearly 110 acts playing throughout Hongdae to enthusiastic crowds of music fans, journalists, and global industry professionals. Featuring four days packed with showcases, conferences, parties and networking opportunities, this year’s Zandari Festa promises to be the most exciting edition of the festival yet!

Before Zandari began, Drinking Boys and Girls Choir, In The Endless Zanhyang We Are, Alice’s Night Circus and Red Rum Club answered a few questions about their plans for the festival.

How many times have you played at Zandari Festa before?
This will be our fourth time playing at the festival. We previously played Zandari Festa in 2013, 2015 and 2016.

Why is Zandari Festa a great festival for Korea’s indie scene?
We can meet many different musicians from lots of other countries, and this helps broaden our view of the music industry. This festival helps to create good opportunities for local bands like us. For example, in August we did an Indonesian tour and next year we’ll go to the UK.

We don’t live in Seoul, but we can meet everyone from the Korean and international music industry that we want to at Zandari Festa.
Why are you excited to be playing at Zandari Festa 2018?
We’re excited to hang out with many musicians and enjoy lots of free beer! We released our first album back in February, and this is good chance for us to promote our album to new listeners.

What bands do you want to try and watch at Zandari Festa 2018?
Se So Neon, Billy Carter, The Rodeos, Dabda, Idiotape, Pakk

You recently signed a record deal with Damnably. Do you have plans for a UK tour?
We’re working on it, but there are no details yet. I think it will happen maybe next Spring.

How many times have you played Zandari?
This will be our third time to play at Zandari Festa. Our first time was in 2016, but we played under a different name. So, this year marks our second time playing as In the Endless Zanhyang We Are.

Why is Zandari Festa a great festival for the Korean scene?
It’s a great opportunity to meet people working in the music industry from all over the world. Without these kinds of showcase festivals happening here in Korea, it would be almost impossible to meet these industry people and show them our music.

Why are you excited to play at Zandari Festa 2018?
This is the fist showcase festival we will have played since we went over to Europe in May. While we were there we played at Focus Wales, The Great Escape and Primavera as well. We learned a lot of things about how showcase festivals work, so we’re looking forward to putting our new skills into practice here in Korea. We’re going to try really hard to make lots of good connections and meet loads of cool and interesting people.

What bands do you want to try and watch at the festival?
I would really like to see Hyunjin Bek and Bone Cult. Despite him being a Korean artist, I’ve never seen Hyunjin Bek live before and he takes part in loads of different musical and art projects. I think it’s going to be interesting to see him perform. We went to see Bone Cult in the UK at Focus Wales and were really looking forward to the show, but sadly their smoke machine set off all the fire alarms and their show was cancelled. Hopefully that doesn’t happen here as well!

We all want to see Eyre Llew as well. We’ve seen them play live so many times now, but they just keep getting better and better. Make sure to catch them while they are in Korea!

Alice’s Night Circus

Will Zandari Festa be your first time playing overseas?
Yes, it’s my first international festival!

Why are you excited about going to Seoul to play at Zandari Festa?
I first heard about Zandari Festa nearly two years ago and checked it out on Facebook at the time, it looks to be an amazing event and the perfect place for my first overseas performance!

What’s something all Zandari fest-goers should know about you?
When I write songs, I love mixing literature references into my lyrics. With it being “Alice’s” Night Circus, I had to have at least one song about Alice in Wonderland. I like to sneak in literature references and some are obvious – War of the Worlds, but others are less so. You will find references to the works of H.G. Wells and George Orwell if you listen carefully.

Aside from performing, what’s the next most important thing on your to-do list at Zandari Festa?
I want to experience the diversity of the other artists and their music.

Red Rum Club

Bassist Simon Hepworth

Will Zandari Festa be your first time playing overseas?
Yes, we all can’t wait for the experience. We will learn so much.

Why are you excited about going to Seoul to play at Zandari Festa?
As it’s our first international festival, we’re really excited to discover new artists and get to know the South Korean music scene more.

What’s something all Zandari fest-goers should know about your band?
They better get ready for an up-tempo fiesta – be sure to bring your dancing shoes and sombreros!

Aside from performing, what’s the next most important thing on your to-do list at Zandari Festa?
We’re going to use the opportunity to network with people from the Korean industry, as mentioned before we’d also like to discover new artists. Not to mention see the sights of Korea.
